Many years ago I overheard a woman talking on a bus. She was a researcher and looking into ways of improving the lives of the disabled, she said something that touched me and has been a core part of my philosophy in building design and engineering ever since.

[TW RAPE, RAPE CULTURE, RAPE APOLOGY, COMPLACENT INCOMPETENT COPS]
So after the scandal of a group of high school boys getting young girls drunk to have group sex with them, recording said acts and then naming and shaming them on facebook under the group name ‘Roast Busters’, the NZ Police said that they needed one ‘Brave young girl’ to come forward. What they didn’t say was that someone came forward two years ago, and another three people have since come forward, talking about this exact same situation.
In response, the above image was posted by The Daily Blog.
Following that, the editor of The Daily Blog received contact from the police being threatened with a fine and/or imprisonment and they promptly took it down.
If the police were able to be as pro-active and swift in taking care of the Roast Busters as they were getting people to take stuff down that derides them, there wouldn’t be the public outrage at the police that we presently have. So I’m posting this here and extending my middle finger to the New Zealand Police Force for their piss-poor handling of the matter.
I haven’t seen any posts about this on tumblr and it’s important to spread the word about so that’s why I’m posting this. Trigger warning for rape, go watch the above video:
If you’re in Auckland watch out for these boys, they have been getting girls black out drunk and group raping them since 2011 then talking about it in videos on their fb page. Some of the girls are under age but the police can’t press charges because none of the girls are currently prepared to make official statements. The two boys in the 3 News video are Beraiah Hales and Joseph Level Parker. Beraiah who is on the left in that video has an askfm (http://ask.fm/Beraiah) where he brags about roastbusters and the fucked up shit has has done and a fb (www.facebook.com/fernando.hales.5) where he puts up selfies with the hastag “famous”. The fact that these boys can get away with this is totally fucked up and pretty much sums up rape culture.
Maybe the police can’t prosecute them but at least we can make sure the whole of NZ knows who they are and that this is the first thing that comes up when anyone google searches them, so please reblog this.

These boys wanted to share their gang rape exploits, I way we make them internet famous. Their names and pictures should always be linked to their admitted crimes. I can’t believe New Zealand police didn’t do anything to stop this when it was going on for YEARS. Thank you to 3 news NZ for the expose, it was the only thing that brought down their disgusting facebook site and brought attention to these monsters. People of NZ take note of these names and faces so you know who they are, the police aren’t doing anything about it.

Read it over.
Let those words resonate in your mind.
Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak, on the question “Have any readers ever asked questions that shocked you?”
Read that again. Read it again, and again, and again. Over and over guys have asked her why Melinda was so upset about being raped. This is a girl who went to a party with friends. She was thirteen. She had a drink, because everyone else was. And a senior held her down and raped her while she was too drunk to get away.
And guys don’t understand why she was upset.
Read that again and then come back and tell me again why I should just shut up and take a joke when a comedian blows off rape as a big deal, or women’s bodies are casually treated as commodities in media. Remind me why I shouldn’t care about the very real harm that society’s treatment of women and sexual assault does.
